The subject, an abstract portrait of the literary figure, Queequeg, from Moby Dick, is depicted as a sort of visual summation of his journey through the beginning, middle, and end of the tale. The title is a quote of Queequeg’s that is indicative of his character and larger themes of the novel.

Starting with an oil ground on Belgium linen, this painting is created over several sessions of direct markmaking. Various levels of viscosity of paint are used to give the picture its distinct texture.
