oil on linen, 48 X 72, 2016
This large, wall sized work is a loose and abstract depiction of the final moments in the novel Moby Dick. Painted using traditional oil painting methods, the picture consists of dozens of layers of impasto paint layed atop Belgium linen sized with PVA and primed with an oil ground that cures for 6 weeks before painting begins.
Painted over the course of a year, this picture visualizes the underwater world Ahab descends into with the great whale, tangled in the rope of his own harpoon. The doubloon hovers large in the bottom right corner.
